Despite maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, you may have unwanted fat in certain areas of your body. Liposuction is a solution that can give you the body contours you desire. This procedure has evolved significantly over the past 20 years and is effective on most areas of the body. We are pleased to be able to offer liposuction at Prime Vitality, conveniently located in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Goel (“Dr. G”), a board-certified physician, is able to use liposuction to sculpt your body and help you achieve a smoother silhouette. Dr. G is highly skilled in this procedure and approaches each patient as a unique canvas. He will listen to your needs and work to enhance your natural features to achieve your aesthetic goals.
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure used to remove localized areas of fat through a small thin tube called a cannula. Energy application at the tip of the cannula though manually breaking up fat with standard suction assisted (SAL), power-assisted liposuction (PAL), heating the fat through ultrasonic energy (UAL), or laser light energy (LAL) helps remove the unwanted fat cells. Each of these liposuction techniques can refine, flatten, and sculpt the body. Liposuction can be performed to remove fat in just about every area of the body.
Liposuction isn’t typically considered an overall weight-loss method or a weight-loss alternative. You may be a candidate for liposuction if you have too much body fat in specific areas, but your body weight is stable.
Liposuction is used to remove fat from areas of the body that haven’t responded to diet and exercise, such as the:
Abdomen
Upper arms
Buttocks
Calves and ankles
Chest and back
Hips and thighs
Chin and neck
In addition, liposuction can sometimes be used for breast reduction or treatment of gynecomastia.
There are health conditions that can affect your ability to undergo liposuction. People who have health conditions that restrict blood flow or severely weaken their immune system, for example uncontrolled diabetes, cannot have liposuction.
When you gain weight, fat cells increase in size and volume. In turn, liposuction removes fat cells in a specific area. The amount of fat removed depends on the appearance of the area and the volume of fat. The resulting contour changes are generally permanent — as long as your weight remains stable.
Liposuction surgery usually results in temporary swelling that usually subsides within a few weeks. By this time, the treated area should look less bulky. Soon, you will notice that the sculpted areas are getting slimmer. Your abs may finally make their appearance, your arms will fit comfortably into your favorite shirts, or your back will be smoother and more defined.
It is important to keep up with healthy exercise and diet practices to maintain your optimal liposuction results. It’s natural for skin to lose some firmness with aging, but liposuction results are generally long lasting as long as you maintain your weight.
Before the procedure, Dr. G will review your medical history, and ask about any medical conditions you may have and any medications, supplements, or herbs you may be taking. We recommend that you stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners or NSAIDs, at least three weeks prior to surgery. You may also need to get certain lab tests before your procedure. Most liposuction procedures are performed in our clinic in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. If a large amount of fat will be removed — or if you plan to have other procedures done at the same time — the surgery may take place in a hospital followed by an overnight stay. In either case, arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night after the procedure.
Immediately prior to your liposuction procedure, Dr. G will meet with you to review your treatment plan and explain the procedure in detail. Dr. G will answer all your questions and concerns regarding the procedure and will make sure you feel comfortable about your decision to use liposuction to help you achieve your desired appearance. Next, Dr. G will mark your body using a surgical marker in order to highlight anatomical landmarks, incision sites, areas where to remove more/less fat, and areas for specialized sculpting. Before the procedure you will receive some oral pain medications and anxiolytics to calm your nerves.
Dr. G will then inject a sterile solution called Tumescent Anesthesia — a mixture of salt water, which aids fat removal, an anesthetic (lidocaine) to relieve pain, and a drug (epinephrine) that causes the blood vessels to constrict — into the area that’s being treated. The fluid mixture causes the affected area to swell and stiffen. Dr. G will then insert a thin tube called a cannula under your skin through small incisions. The cannula is connected to a vacuum that suctions fat and fluids from your body. Your body fluid may be replenished through an intravenous (IV) line.
The surgical team at Prime Vitality will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen level throughout the procedure and will make sure you are safe and comfortable.
The BodyTite device, featuring an internal probe set to the desired treatment depth, will be inserted into small incisions at strategic locations. The device’s console lets Dr. G control the energy delivered to the tissue and the skin temperature to be achieved, offering both visual and auditory cues as the set temperature is reached.
The hollow probe, connected to low suction, allows the radiofrequency energy to be directed effectively to maximize skin contracture. The energy coagulates adipose vascular and fibrous tissue from the inside out, directly heating the subdermal and subcutaneous layers for skin tightening.
After the BodyTite device has been used, additional power-assisted liposuction may be performed to further remove liquefied fat. The controlled heating that BodyTite provides results in skin and connective tissue tightening, allowing for more aggressive liposuction in areas with loose skin.
The liquified fat is then gently removed via liposuction and vacuum. This ensures efficient removal of fat cells, enabling the skin to contract and reform, resulting in slimmer and smoother body contours.
You can expect some pain, swelling, and bruising after the procedure. Dr.G will prescribe some medication to help control the pain and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. You will be provided compression garments to wear for a few weeks after your surgery to reduce swelling. You may need to wait a few days before returning to work and a week or two before resuming your normal activities, including exercise. During this time, expect some contour irregularities as the remaining fat settles into position.
Liposuction is a highly customized procedure. Because of this, you will receive individual pricing based on your personalized treatment plan. The number and location of areas treated, the type of liposuction used, any additional treatment like Face or BodyTite, the type of anesthetic utilized, and the extent of your procedure will affect your total cost.
